Rebel Academics Lecture #9 - "Euro, Porno, Jackie O.: Times Square Film Culture & The Politics of the 1970's"

Friday, Dec 05, 2014 7:00 PM

Please consider joining us for the 9th in our occasional Rebel Academics' Lecture series, titled "Euro, Porno, Jackie O.: Times Square Film Culture & The Politics of the 1970's" with UWG Professor Erin Mock, jointly sponsored by the UWG English Department and Underground Books.

Lecture Summary:
In the summer of 1972, Americans watched celebrities flock to New York’s Times Square to see Deep Throat, Gerard Damiano’s pornographic blockbuster, on the nightly news. The film’s male star, Harry Reems, was arrested for his performance and the film itself was widely censored. But, while discussions of porn and politics inevitably hinge on censorship, Mock argues that there are other political dimensions to the so-called “Golden Age of Porn.” In fact, “porno-chic” contributed to the polarizing of political parties in the Nixon era in ways that impacted electoral politics throughout the following decade and beyond.

Join us at 6:30 for complimentary light refreshments and mingling. The lecture will begin at 7:00 and last about an hour, with a short question/discussion period at the end.

About the Lecture Series:
