The Brick & Mortar Bookstore
You're sure to find the magic of books just a few steps down a staircase from a bustling street in a quaint downtown in Georgia, where a hundred-year-old basement holds an archway made of books, a fireplace stuffed with letters from a school for sorcery, and bookshelves full of stories ready to enchant you. Underground Books is a charmingly eccentric bookshop actually located underground, several steps below street level in historic downtown Carrollton, Georgia.
Our mission is to foster a more literate and free-thinking West Georgia and to nurture the next generation of book lovers and collectors.
Our online store is intended as a space to highlight our more uncommon and rare books for a wider audience than the foot traffic we get on Adamson Square. Our online inventory is housed off site. If you are a local customer and would like to see an item from our website, please contact us, and we would be pleased to transfer the item to the shop for your viewing or purchasing convenience.
Hills & Hamlets Bookshop
In September of 2016, our sister store, Hills & Hamlets Bookshop, opened its doors in the nearby community of Serenbe. Located in the Atlanta metropolitan area within gorgeously rural Chattahoochee Hill Country, Serenbe is a New Urbanist community focused on the arts, agriculture, health & wellbeing, and education. With sections representing each of Serenbe's principles and the fiction, children's, and popular titles that make an indie bookstore great, Hills & Hamlets Bookshop offers a charming literary, intellectual, and cultural experience.
Josh Niesse & Megan Bell, Owners
Josh and Megan met just after Josh opened the shop in March of 2011, were married in May of 2014, and now operate their book business together. Josh graduated from Western Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a minor in religion. Megan earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature with a minor in creative writing from the University of West Georgia in 2013. Both Megan and Josh have attended the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar, Josh in 2011 on a scholarship from AbeBooks and Megan in 2014 on a scholarship from the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA).
Underground Books, LLC is a proud and active member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA), the American Booksellers Association (ABA), the Southern Independent Booksellers Association (SIBA), and the Georgia Antiquarian Booksellers Association (GABA).
Professional Photography Inquiries
We are honored by the number of high school and college seniors, engaged couples, and brands who want to include us as part of their photographs! In the best interest of our staff, our bookstore, our browsing guests, and you, all professional photography is by appointment only; please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss details and scheduling. We require professional shoots to take place before or after our regular hours (11am-6pm, 7 days a week), and our location fee is $100 per 45 minutes, which can be applied to any purchase in-store (i.e. you can purchase a gift card, books, puzzles, tees, or any other item in store and count it toward the location fee). If you have questions or you wish to take pictures in the store but the above doesn't describe your needs, send us an e-mail and we'll be happy to discuss it further.
