Seize the Time: The Story of the Black Panther Party and Huey P. Newton FIRST EDITION
New York: Random House, 1970. First edition, first printing, with “First Edition” and the number line 98 765432 on the copyright page. Brown cloth in the unclipped $6.95 first-issue dust jacket, code 5/70 on the rear flap. The jacket was designed by Bob Antler, with an illustration by Howard Brodie drawn from the 1969 Chicago conspiracy trial, in which Seale was bound and gagged in the courtroom. A bright, clean, tight copy with no book club markings. The only marks are Wood’s two-line ink note on the rear endpaper. The jacket shows only light rubbing at the upper edge and head of spine. Seale’s founding account of the Black Panther Party was written from jail, drawing on tape recordings made in 1968–70.
First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine / Very Good +. Item #UB-17988
From the library of John Lewis Wood, an Indianapolis attorney long active with the ACLU and involved in school desegregation work. His ink note “13 July 1970 / LPA” on the rear endpaper records the day he finished the book, as he did in many of his books. He read it within weeks of publication, while Seale was jailed awaiting trial in New Haven.
