Behind the Surgeon's Mask FIRST EDITION [ex libris bookplate Charles Atwood Kofoid]
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1940.
First Edition. Hardcover. 8 3/4" X 6". xii, 308pp. Notable pictorial scientific bookplate of zoologist Charles Atwood Kofoid, influential in the establishment of marine biology through his classification of new species of marine protozoans, to front pastedown. Rather heavy edgewear to unclipped dust jacket, with chipping and open tears at edges and extremities, chipping to head and tail of spine, and dust soiling. Blue cloth over boards with upper board stamped with caduceus and book design in gilt and spine lettered in like. Mild edgewear to binding, with bumping to corners and slight lean to spine. Binding is firm and sound. Pages are clean and unmarked. A handsome first printing in worn but present dust jacket of these dramatic surgical stories by James Harpole, author of Leaves from a Surgeon's Case-Book, with fascinating provenance. Very good / good. Item #3381
