Love in Art FIRST EDITION

Boston: L. C. Page and Company, 1898.

First Edition. Hardcover. This tribute to love in art is beautifully bound in wine-red cloth, with a binding designed by artist Amy M. Sacker (1872-1965). Illustrated in 4 tissue-guarded photogravure plates and 32 further monochrome plates from celebrated paintings by the great masters, this pictorial guide to love in art spans such subjects as: Love in Greek Art, Biblical Love Stories, Venus and Cupid, Myths and Fancies, Painters' Loves, The Goddess of Love and Her Son, Mythologic and Ideal Love Stories, Love Scenes in Literature, and Wives and Sweethearts, along with a bibliography and index. As the author writes in her introduction: "The love between man and woman has been told in story and poem since long before the days of Sappho. It forms, indeed, the subject of the great bulk of what we call literature....The masterpieces in painting and sculpture are generally not labelled love stories....However this may be, it is nevertheless true that many beautiful pictures and sculptures do tell, in no uncertain language, the old, old story which will charm the world so long as there are men and women to read it." An ardently ardorned and very well preserved 1898 first edition, in the sublime binding designed by Amy M. Sacker, of Mary Knight Potter's presentation of the many love stories within the greatest artworks in history.
