Angling of the Test; or, True Love Under Stress SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION with CHRISTMAS CARD
New York: The Derrydale Press, 1936.
First Edition. Hardcover. 9 1/4" X 6 1/4". 25pp. One of 197 copies signed by H. G. Pickering.
A humorous and finely printed “diurnal postulation” on the tribulations of marriage and the noble escape of fly-fishing, composed by H.G. Pickering, past president of the Anglers’ Club of New York. Printed in a limited edition of only 197 signed copies, this copy is #122 of 197, signed by the author on the title page. Bound in the original blind-stamped black cloth boards with gilt title to the front cover, in remarkably fine condition, preserved under clear protective mylar. Internally clean and bright.
Of special note is the laid-in printed Christmas card from “Susan and Harold,” bearing a light verse referencing political dismay (likely an upper class swipe at FDR) and holiday cheer, with an original illustrated cover titled "Sarge and Judy", depicting two beloved dogs in a style suggestive of private gift ephemera. This does not appear to be publisher-issued but likely reflectS a personal holiday greeting from the author and his wife, Susan Shipp Pickering. While undocumented as far as we can find, the card's presence offers intriguing additonal association value and charm.
Housed in a custom plain tan slipcase, likely created by a collector to protect the book. While not original to the Derrydale Press, the case fits precisely and enhances preservation.
A pristine example of this Derrydale gem, made all the more compelling by its ephemera and gift-like presentation—ideal for collectors of fine press sporting books, angling literature, or New York angling club history. Very good. Item #16807
