The Myths of Ancient Egypt
London: George G. Harrap & Company, 1915.
Hardcover. "Let us walk in the gloom of the pyramids, in the cool shadows of ruined temples…trusting that by virtue of the light we carry we shall succeed in unravelling to some extent the age-long enigma of this mystic land…" With these words, folklorist and occult scholar James Lewis Thomas Chalmers Spence (1874–1955) summons us to a journey through Egyptian myth and legend. In these pages, you will explore ancient temples and the mysteries of the Egyptian priesthood, the Book of the Dead, powerful deities including the falcon-headed Sun-God Ra, the feline goddess Bastet and her festival, the jackal-headed funeral god Anubis, the god of magic, wisdom, and the moon Thoth, and the cult of the Lord of the Underworld and of resurrection Osiris, along with ancient Egyptian magic, alchemy, amulets, totemism, animism, and fetishism, the birth of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut, and more. Appearing as if carved into the plaster and limestone of an ancient tomb itself and adorned with gilt, this 1915 edition of The Myths of Ancient Egypt is worthy of reverence both without and within—fully illustrated throughout in 16 captivating, full-color plates by Evelyn Maude Blanche Paul (1883–1963) and in 32 additional photographic plates. This book is of special interest to collectors of mythology, scholars of ancient Egypt, or students of the occult.
