The Growth and Structure of Motives: Psychological Studies in the Theory of Action FIRST EDITION

Glencoe, Illinois: The Free Press, 1956.

First Edition. Hardcover. This study of the theory of motivation is the work of psychologist James Olds (1922–1976), one of the founders of modern neuroscience and co-discoverer of the pleasure center of the brain. This particular copy is from the collection of “The Expert on Experts,” Florida State University cognitive psychologist Anders Ericsson (1947-2020), the globally recognized researcher in the field of performance studies and the psychological nature of expertise whose work Malcolm Gladwell popularized in his bestselling book Outliers.

8 5/8" X 5 7/8". 277pp, plus publisher's list of titles. Presents nicely in protective archival sleeved dust jacket. Rather heavy edgewear to unclipped dust jacket, with chipping and small tears to edges and extremities, open tear to sunned spine, and dust soiling and faint dampstains to panels. The dust jacket definitely did its job, however. Bound in full tan cloth over boards, with upper board and spine lettered in black and red. Mild wear to binding, with slight lean to spine, some edgewear, and gentle bumping. Faded red topstain. Binding is firm and sound. Some pencilled underlining and annotations throughout. A solid presumed first printing with interesting provenance. Good + / good. Item #12850
