A handsome complete set in two charmingly bound volumes of the best known work and its sequel by "Kentucky's first important novelist" James Lane Allen (1849–1925), A Kentucky Cardinal and Aftermath follow the tumultuous love affair between Adam, a hermit devoted to the natural world, its creatures, and the fairyland of his garden, and Georgianna, his beautiful next-door neighbor who would have him love only her.

7" X 4 3/4". 138pp; 138pp. Both volumes bound in full green cloth over boards, with cardinal stamped in red atop a green and black bough to upper boards, lettered in gilt and ruled in green to upper board and spine. Mild wear to bindings, with some rubbing and bumping to extremities and lean to spines. Hinges a touch tender; bindings remain firm and sound. Previous owner's inked inscription to front free endpapers. Occasional light foxing to pages, else clean and unmarked. A Kentucky Cardinal is illustrated in frontispiece and three plates. Very good.
