London: E. Nister, circa 1908.
Hardcover. This pocket-size companion unites each day of the year with a quote from the Bard, collecting the birthdays of the cast of characters in your life, with the fun of applying a Shakespearean quote to their lives. This copy is undated but bears a gift inscription from 1908 to front free endpaper ("Helen, Xmas 1908 / From Aunt Ada"), accompanied by a pasted in 1 1/4" X 1 1/8" photograph, seemingly of Aunt Ada, an older woman smiling in an enormous feathered hat. The recipient appears to be Helen Gladwin Plumb (1862-1940) of Worthington, Ohio, with nine names of family members, including Aunt Ada of course, in their respective birthday placements in the book throughout. A true gift of a gift book and a charm to cherish, this little Shakespeare Birthday Book, illustrated in engraved frontispiece of two lovebirds, with floral vignettes on every page, many hand-painted in water-color.
