Louisville, Kentucky: John P. Morton & Company, 1897.

First Edition. Hardcover. 8 5/8" X 6". v, 111pp, plus fold-out map of Mammoth Cave. Bound in full red cloth over boards, with upper board decorated in black and gilt and spine lettered in gilt. Moderate wear to binding, with bumping to extremities, corners turned in, scattered rubbing, and lean to spine. Front hinge tender, with tear to gutter at rear hinge. Binding is sound. Occasional smudge or crease to pages throughout. One of the two "Autographs" pages at rear is filled out by a gentleman from Mobile, Alabama: "Will never forget the pleasant hours spent in the cave in your company." A statement in ink to front pastedown tells the story of the original owners of this book, a Mr. and Mrs. Charles Louis Mylius who bought this book when honeymooning at Mammoth Cave in the Fall of 1898. 2 1/2" closed tear to inner bottom margin of pages 47-54. An admittedly worn but complete and still quite presentable 1897 printing of Horace Carter Hovey and Richard Ellsworth Call's illustrated guide to Kentucky's Mammoth Cave, including historical notes, scenic accounts, and descriptive and scientific matters of interest for visitors based on new and original explorations, illustrated in many monochrome photographic reproductions throughout and in a fold-out map at rear. This particular copy's unique and tender provenance adds to the delights within. Fair. Item #6420
