This circa 1887 salesman's dummy of Henry Davenport Northrop's Earth, Sea and Sky features a sampling of the contents, text, and illustrations of the book, with the salesman's order notes at rear, and full samples of the binding options available to book buyers of the time: extra fine cloth, silk finish, leather (library style), and extra fine full Morocco. A fun and out-of-the-ordinary look at what the pre-publication form of a beautiful popular natural history book looked like toward the end of the 19th Century.
9 1/4" X 6 3/8". Blue cloth over upper board and spine, with upper board stamped with vignettes from nature in red, black, and gilt, with rear board backed in burgundy Morocco leather and stamped in blind and lettered in gilt. Optional spine backings attached to front pastedowns. Lacking front free endpaper and starting with the page xi, showing the table of contents starting with Chapter XVII, and thus likey lacking some of the first pages. Tears to rear free endpaper and to several pages, with large closed tear across bottom quarter of pages 25/26 and open tear with some missing text to botto corner of page 207/208. Text block is shaken but sound. Includes additional text and sample pages in German as well. Fair. Item #6284
