Front hinge a touch tender. Previous owner's gift inscription to Louise Dyer, dated Xmas 1888 to vero of front free endpaper. Frontispiece of Florence Nightingale with book in hand and title page illustration of her early home by Lea Hurst. Some foxing, often to verso of plates. Binding is sound. Pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. This handsome Victorian-era collection of short biographies of notable women pays tribute to the lives and accomplishments of famed female figures such as Queen Victoria, Charlotte Bronte, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Louisa May Alcott, and many more, thoroughly illustrated throughout in tissue-guarded frontispiece and numerous vignettes and full-page plates of these "good & great women," with portraits, scenes from their lives, and images of their work and their homes.
