A handsomely bound second edition of this important work examining human evolution and sexual selection by naturalist Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882), whose contributions to the science of evolution have made his work immortal.
7 3/8" X 5 1/8". xvi, 693pp. Presents nicely in protective archival jacket. Handsomely bound in contemporaenous half-calf, with marbled paper over boards and matching marbled edges and endpapers. Spine beautifully tooled in gilt within four compartments and lettered in gilt over black leather inlay. Name label of W. H. Hoskings, possibly the New South Wales industrialist (d. 1906), pasted in to blank space on page 5. Moderate wear to binding, with bumping, rubbing, and indentations to leather-bound corners, rubbing to edges and to head of spine, and wear to exterior hinges. Hinges are a touch tender, the front hinge moreso, but binding remains sound. Foxing to flyleaves and to some preliminary and concluding pages, most of text block unaffected and clear. Very good.
