Moderate wear to binding, with bumping to extremities, fraying to head and tail of spine, hard lean to spine, and mild soiling to cloth. Previous owner's name to front free endpaper, dated 1899. Both hinges starting, with webbing visible at hinges and at middle of text block; binding remains sound. Pages are mildly foxed, heaviest at introductory and closing leaves, else unmarked. A solid first printing of this novel of sorcery and voodoo in the West Indies, featuring a black Barbadian woman as its protagonist, by artist, art critic, and novelist Haldane Macfall (1860-1928), with the controversial and suppressed original cover illustration by the author.
