First Edition. Hardcover. 7 3/4" X 5 1/4". xiii, 250pp. Pale blue cloth over boards, with upper board and spine lettered in dark blue and Mayan design stamped in kind to upper board. Mild edgewear to binding, with bumping to corners and sunning to spine. Foxing to edges of text block. Pictorial endpapers feature a group of men in traditional Mexican garb. Old price pencilled in red to rear pastedown. Small tear to margin of pages 177 and 178, with crease to top corner of several pages following. Binding is firm and sound. Pages are clean and unmarked. An overall well preserved and presentable first printing of this novel of Yucatan, an adventure that weaves in folk-tales of and facts about the Mayan civilization of Yucatan. The author, archeologist and diplomat Edward H. Thompson (1857-1935), as a boy set out to clear up the mystery of the Mayan civilization and was appointed consul to Yucatan from 1885 to 1909. This book is charmingly illustrated throughout by the author's youngest daughter, Abby May Thompson. Good. Item #5242
