Green cloth over boards, with cascading daisies stamped in gilt to upper board and spine, and both lettered in kind. Moderate wear to binding, with bumping and light fraying to corners, sunning to spine, and hard lean to spine. Top edge gilt. Bookseller's notes pencilled to endpapers and ticket to rear pastedown. Both hinges tender and starting with webbing peeking through. Tear to gutter of front free endpaper. Binding remains sound. Pages are clean and unmarked. This beautiful gilt-adorned 1898 edition of Cranford, one of Elizabeth Gaskell's most enduring works, is the first printing with color illustrations by Hugh Thomson, of which there are forty along with sixty black-and-white sketches.
