Bound in full leather by the Relfe Brothers of London, with gilt embellishments to boards and spine, lettered in gilt with five raised bands and five gilt-stamped compartments. All edges marbled, with spectacular marbled endpapers. Prize volume given by the Day School for Girls in Hull and dated July 9th, 1889 at bookplate to front free endpaper. Moderate wear to binding, with corners turned in, edgewear, and scattered scratching and indentations to boards. Moderate foxing to pages throughout. Binding is firm and sound. This exceedingly lovely leather bound 1889 printing of the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen is illustrated throughout in over a hundred illustrations and includes a biography of the author by translator Caroline Peachey as well as beloved fairy tales The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Snow Queen, The Red Shoes, The Little Match Girl, and many more.
