Laid in is a bawdy poem entitled "Malte Virtute" handwritten on both sides of a sheet of Air Mail letterhead, with note "to cartoonist Prim and the other residents at "Hell's Buggerie," and signed "From the Merchant Navy to the ATS." Green cloth over bevelled boards, with upper board and spine stamped in gilt and striking floral design to upper board. Moderate wear to binding, with bumping and rubbing to extremities and sunning to spine. Foxing to half-title and occasional smudge or spot of foxing to pages throughout, else unmarked. Front hinge repaired with glue. Spine visible at last page. Binding remains quite sound. A solid and handsome 1899 printing of these poems by William Luther Longstaff, accompanied by a less formal poem from the Merchant Navy, circa 1950s. Good. Item #4563
