London: A. W. Bennett, 1866.

Leather bound. 8" X 6 1/2". 206pp, plus fifteen tissue-guarded mounted albumen photographs by Glasgow photographer Thomas Annan. Bound in full morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt to boards and spine, with all edges gilt and inner gilt dentelles. Rather heavy edgewear to binding, with corners, edges, and extremities rubbed, bumping to corners, exterior front hinge starting to separate at bottom edge, and light scattered rubbing to gilt at upper board. Heavy toning and darkening to endpapers. Chipping to front free endpaper. Spot of dampstaining to bottom margin of front endpapers through to page 2. Some rippling to text block, occasionally quite evident at margin of page or plate. Occasional smudge to pages and plates, with occasional foxing to tissue-guards. Second plate lacking tissue-guard. Binding remains quite sound and firm.

A truly stunning edition of Sir Walter Scott's beloved historical romance in verse of 16th-century Britain, illustrated throughout in fifteen mounted albumen photographs, including images of Bamborough Castle and Lindisfarne Priory, by the prominent Scottish photographer Thomas Annan (1829–1887), famed for his photographs of Glasgow slums as well as his aesthetic and technical virtuosity.
