First Edition. Hardcover. 7 7/8" X 5 1/4" xiii, 296pp. Blue cloth over boards, with upper board stamped in cream and gilt with laurel and fleur-de-lis device. Title label to spine chipped and heavily toned. Heavy scattered rubbing to upper board, chipping to head and tail of spine, and mild edgewear. Front hinge cracked and attached by strings. Title page loose and laid in. First gathering coming loose. Pages are unmarked. Newspaper clipping entitled "A Feeble Clerical Philosopher" laid in, a very critical and lengthy review of a sermon given by Van Dyke at Chicago University entitled "Democracy and Culture." Clipping is in several pieces and very brittle. An admittedly worn but still quite charming first edition of Van Dyke's essays on the poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Fair. Item #3123
