First Edition. Hardcover. 7" X 5". vii, 288pp, plus two leaves of ads. Brown cloth over boards nicely stamped in gilt, red, and black. Spine split 4" from tail up along rear board, with smaller tear along upper board edge, shallow chipping to head and tail of spine, and bumping to corners. Lean to spine. Both hinges tender, with front hinge starting at half-title. Patterned endpapers. Heavy age-toning to pages throughout, with occasional spot of foxing, else unmarked. A worn but still quite charming first edition of this novel by Julia Constance Fletcher (1853-1938), novelist, playwright, traveling companion to Oscar Wilde, and subject of Gertrude Stein's A Portrait of Constance Fletcher.
