A Book of Lullabies

Boston: Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co., 1925.

First Edition. Hardcover. This 1925 first edition is devoted to the art of the lullaby, from the beautiful Art Nouveau, flower-ringed mother and child gracing its cover to the "cradle songs of different times and climes" collected within. These traditional and time-honored folksongs from around the world were compiled by children's librarian and author of several books for young people Elva Sophronia Smith (1871-1965), who arranged each lullaby into subjects including "The Protection of the Heavenly Powers," "Nature Lullabies," "Fairies and Enchantments," "Evening Prayers and Hymns," and much more, with several helpful indices for finding both beloved and lesser known lullabies. Illustrated in a frontispiece and 15 monochrome plates from famous paintings by such artists as Jessie Wilcox Smith, Albert Neuhuys, Hans Herterich, and others, this is as enchanting a book, inside and out, as the songs its pages collect. This particular first printing features a touching multi-generational gift inscription to its front free endpaper, first gifted to Carol from her sister on her thirtieth birthday on April 1st, 1928, then gifted againt, this time from Carol, now a grandmother, 31 years later, to her daughter Eleanor on the birth of her son, April 2nd, 1959.

8" X 5 5/8". xxii, 563pp. Publisher's cloth binding by Decorative Designers, with their monogram, two Ds with the second in reverse, to upper board. Bound in full lilac cloth over aobards, with Art Nouveau mother cradling her babe within a wreath of poppies, stamped in pink and black to upper board over a gilt background, with upper board and spine lettered in gilt, and additional poppy in cream and black to spine. Moderate wear to binding, with gentle bumping to extremities, slight sun-fading to spine, black line to edge of upper board at spine, very faint warping to boards, and fraying to tail of spine. Multi-generational gift inscription to front free endpaper. Front hinge tender; binding remains firm, sound, and square. Pages are gently age-toned, else clean and unmarked. Very good. Item #14406
